CirQula India & Nirmyx Recycle 500 Kg E-Waste in Kolkata for World Environment Day

Have you ever wondered where your old mobile phone, broken laptop, damaged charger, or unused electronic gadgets go after they are thrown away? While many people assume they simply disappear, the reality is quite different. A large amount of electronic waste, or e-waste, ends up in landfills, where it can release harmful chemicals into the soil and water, posing serious risks to both the environment and human health. As the use of electronic devices continues to grow, so does the amount of e-waste we generate. This makes responsible e-waste recycling in India more important than ever. By recycling discarded electronics the right way, we can recover valuable materials, reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, and take a meaningful step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.

What Happened in Kolkata’s E-Waste Collection Drive?

The event took place in Kolkata to celebrate World Environment Day. It was the result of a month-long e-waste collection drive across the city. People from many homes and offices gave away their old and broken electronic items instead of throwing them in the dustbin.

By the end of the drive, the team had collected over 500 kg of electronic and electrical waste. This included things like:

    • Old mobile phones
    • Broken chargers and cables
    • Used laptops and computer parts
    • Small home appliances
    • Other end-of-life electronic devices

The Partnership Between CirQula India and Nirmyx

CirQula India is an authorised e-waste management company that recycles electronic waste in a safe and scientific way. Nirmyx is a student-led volunteer group. 10 students started it at Modern High School for Girls.

The Partnership Between CirQula India and Nirmyx

Together, they planned and ran the whole e-waste collection drive. CirQula India made sure the waste was collected, moved, and recycled the right way. Nirmyx worked hard to spread awareness and get people in Kolkata to take part.

    Key People Behind the Initiative

Some important guests joined the event, including:

    • Barbara Voss, Consul General of Germany in Kolkata
    • Priyasha Singhania, Founder & CEO of CirQula India
    • The Nirmyx core team and student volunteers

They all spoke about why responsible e-waste management is so important today, and how young people can lead the way in protecting our environment.

Why E-Waste Recycling Matters for Our Planet

E-waste contains a mix of valuable and hazardous materials. While devices are made with metals like copper, aluminium, and gold that can be recovered and reused, they also contain substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium that can harm the environment if disposed of improperly. This is why responsible e-waste recycling is essential.

Here is why e-waste recycling matters:

    • It stops harmful chemicals like lead and mercury from entering the soil and water
    • It saves natural resources because old metals and parts can be reused
    • It reduces landfill waste, keeping our cities cleaner
    • It supports a circular economy, where materials are used again and again instead of being thrown away
    • It protects human health, especially for workers and communities near dumping sites

    Did You Know?

Every kilogram of e-waste that gets recycled the right way means less pollution and more saved resources. This is why companies like CirQula India work hard every day to build a cleaner circular economy.

How the E-Waste Collection Drive Worked

The process followed by CirQula India and Nirmyx was simple but very well planned. Here is how it worked, step by step:

    1. Citizens across Kolkata dropped off their old electronic items during the month-long drive
    2. All the collected e-waste was stored safely at Rajarhat
    3. A special CirQula vehicle arrived to collect the waste
    4. Nirmyx volunteers joined the vehicle as it moved through the city
    5. The vehicle reached the German Consulate General office, which was the final stop of the campaign
    6. The e-waste was officially handed over to CirQula India for authorised recycling

From Rajarhat to the German Consulate

This journey was not just about moving waste from one place to another. It was a symbol. It showed how students, industry experts, and government representatives can come together for one good cause, protecting our environment.

    What CirQula India’s Founder Said-

Speaking about the initiative, Priyasha Singhania, Founder & CEO of CirQula India, shared that sustainable change begins with awareness and collective action. She also said that responsible e-waste management is now essential, not optional, for protecting the environment.

This shows how much CirQula India believes in working with young changemakers and local communities to build a greener future.

Why Youth-Led Initiatives Like Nirmyx Inspire Change

It is easy to think that only big companies can solve environmental problems. But Nirmyx proves that it is not true. A group of 10 school students managed to:

    • Collect over 500 kg of e-waste in just one month
    • Get people across Kolkata to care about responsible recycling
    • Work closely with an authorised recycling partner like CirQula India
    • Earn Certificates of Appreciation for their hard work and dedication

This kind of youth leadership shows that anyone, at any age, can help protect our planet.

How You Can Recycle Your E-Waste Responsibly

Recycling e-waste doesn’t have to wait for a special occasion. By making a few simple choices, you can help reduce pollution, recover valuable materials, and support responsible waste management.

    • Never dispose of electronic devices in your regular dustbin. E-waste requires specialised collection and recycling.
    • Drop off old gadgets at authorised e-waste collection centres or manufacturer take-back programmes whenever possible.
    • Choose certified e-waste recyclers instead of selling devices to unverified scrap dealers who may not dispose of them safely.
    • Back up and erase your personal data from phones, laptops, and other devices before recycling or donating them.
    • Encourage your school, college, workplace, or community to organise e-waste collection drives, just as Nirmyx did during its World Environment Day initiative.
    • Support organisations and companies that promote responsible recycling of e-waste and other waste streams, including batteries, glass, and tyres.

CirQula India’s Role in Building a Circular Economy

CirQula India does not stop at just collecting e-waste. It focuses on turning waste into something useful again. This is called a circular economy. Instead of throwing things away forever, materials are reused, repaired, or recycled so they can be used again.

CirQula India works across many areas, including:

    • E-waste recycling
    • Glass sector recycling
    • Tyre recycling
    • Solar panel recycling
    • Lithium battery recycling

This wide reach shows why CirQula India is seen as a leading name in e-waste recycling in India and the larger circular economy movement.

    Final Thoughts

The partnership between CirQula India and Nirmyx is a great example of how big change can start small. A group of school students, one recycling company, and a whole city coming together; that is how 500 kg of e-waste stayed out of landfills and entered a safe, responsible recycling process.

This World Environment Day story reminds us that everyone has a role to play. Whether you are a student, a business, or just someone with an old phone lying around, small actions add up to a big impact.
